Sporting weapons (e.g. for target shooting) require very high accuracy and stability. Therefore, the bore of a barrel for sporting weapons is often designed to minimize the effect of any deviations in the manufacturing process, which means a very careful drilling process.

Hunting weapons (e.g. shotguns or rifles) usually require a barrel that is durable and capable of firing a wide range of cartridges. For these weapons, the bore can be tailored to the specific type of cartridge (e.g., caliber) and type of projectile (e.g., single shot or buckshot).
